Privacy Policy
Lazy French helps you learn the French you meet in daily life. To do that we keep the French you send us, the cards made from it, and how you practise them. We don't sell any of it, we don't show ads, and you can ask us to delete all of it.
This policy covers the Lazy French Telegram bot (@frqbec_bot), its practice page inside Telegram, the web app at app.lazyfrench.one, the Lazy French iOS and Android apps, and this website. Lazy French is operated from Quebec, Canada.
What we collect
Your account
- Telegram: your numeric Telegram user ID and the language your Telegram app is set to. We don't store your Telegram name, username or phone number.
- Google or Apple sign-in: the account ID Google or Apple gives us and the email address on that account. We never see your Google or Apple password.
- Guest use: a random ID tied to your device until you sign in.
- Your settings: the language you want explanations in and your French level.
What you send us
- Text you send to be explained, and the explanations we send back.
- Photos are read once to produce the explanation and are never saved on our servers. On Telegram we keep only Telegram's reference to the photo, which stays in your Telegram chat. In the app, a reduced copy stays on your own device and is never uploaded for storage.
- Words you import from your notes, by text or photo, handled the same way.
Your learning
- Your cards, collections, readings, practice exercises, the answers you type, and your review history and schedule.
- How many explanations, readings and review rounds you've used, so we can apply the free-trial limits.
Payments
- Web: payments go through Stripe. Stripe collects your card details; we never see or store them. We keep the Stripe customer and subscription IDs, the plan, its status and its dates.
- Telegram: payments in Telegram Stars go through Telegram. We keep Telegram's payment reference and the date your pass ends.
Technical data
- Server logs record which part of the service was called, whether it worked and how long it took. They don't contain your messages or cards.
- Our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes your IP address to deliver and protect the service.
Why we use it
- To explain the French you send, save the cards, and build your readings and practice sessions.
- To sign you in and keep your deck in sync across Telegram, the web and your phone.
- To apply free-trial limits and give paying learners unlimited access.
- To fix problems and keep the service secure.
- To send you messages about the service, such as a new feature or a change to your pass. We don't send marketing email.
We use your information only for these purposes. If we ever want to use it for something else, we'll ask you first.
Who processes it for us
We use a few service providers to run Lazy French. They may only use your information to provide their service to us.
- Cloudflare hosts the service and its database.
- Google (Gemini API) reads the text and photos you send to write the explanations, readings and exercises. We use Google's paid API, whose terms don't let Google use this content to improve its products. We may switch this work to Anthropic (Claude), under similar terms.
- Google Cloud Text-to-Speech receives the French text on a card when you tap to hear it.
- Google and Apple handle sign-in if you choose them.
- Telegram carries your bot conversations and Stars payments.
- Stripe handles web payments.
These providers may store or process information outside Quebec and Canada, mainly in the United States, where it is subject to local law. We checked that each one protects personal information adequately before using it.
Cookies and device storage
When you sign in to the web app, we set one cookie that keeps you signed in. The mobile apps keep the same kind of sign-in key in your phone's secure storage. We don't use advertising or analytics cookies, and nothing on this website tracks you.
How long we keep it
- Your account, cards and learning history are kept while you use Lazy French, and deleted within 30 days of your request.
- Payment records are kept as long as tax law requires, usually six years.
- Server logs are kept for a short period and then deleted automatically.
- Your Telegram chat with the bot is stored by Telegram, not by us. You can delete it in Telegram at any time.
Your rights
You can ask us to:
- tell you what personal information we have about you and give you a copy, including in a structured, commonly used format;
- correct anything that's wrong;
- delete your account and everything in it;
- stop using your information for a purpose you agreed to.
Email support@lazyfrench.one from the email on your account, or include your Telegram user ID, so we can confirm it's you. We reply within 30 days. Deleting your account doesn't cancel a subscription by itself; cancel it first so you aren't charged again.
If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec or the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
Security
All traffic is encrypted. Sign-in secrets are stored only in hashed form, access to the database is limited to the operator, and every piece of learning data is tied to its owner's account. No system is perfectly secure. If a breach puts your information at risk, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
Lazy French isn't intended for children under 14, and we don't knowingly collect their information. If you believe a child under 14 has used it, contact us and we'll delete their account.
Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we'll update the date at the top. If a change is significant, we'll also tell you in the bot or the app before it takes effect.
